The Semerads To Ateneo

According to chinoyhoopsfan, a source close to the San Beda Red Lions announced that the Semerad Twins, David and Anthony, withdrew from San Beda College and are set to enroll at Ateneo de Manila University this coming March. The source said that they plan to "play in a bigger stage," hence the decision to transfer.

The only question that remains now is the duration of their residency. It is possible that they will sit out only for a year and will start playing for the Blue Eagles for Season 76 (SY 2013-2014), it will still be determined because they already played in the PBA Development League. And, as chinoyhoopsfan says, they might be sitting out for an extra year.

Anthony Semerad is a 6-foot-4 small forward coming off the bench, and is known for his perimeter shooting. David, on the other hand, is a 6-foot-5 center whose name rose after the Red Lions' second Finals game against the San Sebastian Stags. Averaging only 3.1ppg, he scored 15 points in that championship-clinching game, including a split on the charity line after a Calvin Abueva technical and a driving layup that led to the win.

It will be interesting to see how they will be integrated into the Ateneo system in the few coming years.

  1. The plan was orchestrated by Ateneo with the approval of MVP without the knowledge of San Beda Coaching Staff. San Beda was blind sided by its very patron and the Twins agreed with the plan.

  2. My two cents:

1.) Is there any evidence of this? Until there is, perhaps it would be respectful to doubt these opinions until truth can be verified.

1a. I highly doubt the claim that Ateneo orchestrates this whole thing, because for one, the Blue Eagles have a contingency plan that extends beyond this season. The Blue Eaglets have great potential despite finishing only third in the UAAP Juniors. Team B has a lot of potent players among them, including Nico Elorde and Joma Adornado, who will be playing for the Blue and White in the next three years. In fact, with the plans available for Ateneo, it might seem to much for the Semerads to be included there. There might be a chance that they will be relegated to Team B or play for shorter minutes because of how loaded the Ateneo roster is.

1b. Despite MVP's approval, they cannot just withdraw from the school without the approval of their coaching staff. If CS intends on keeping them because they are important, then they could raise it to MVP and actually have power over him because they are those directly responsible for these schoolboys.

2.) They made the choice, and I think that was it.

  3. the twins are assured of 2 spots after a year or two in team glory b, if there was no agreement on both parties i don't know what you'll call that. it should be concise, no blah blah blah palusot.

  4. Assured of two spots because some guys who are in Team B now will be going up, and basically it's for everyone to grab, as college kids who also played during their high school years scramble for those positions. Naturally, if they're transferring to play then they will have two spots in Team B. They already have something to show in their resume, and would be taken as enough evidence that they could play. Thus, I still don't take it as an agreement. Or at least, it's too hasty to conclude it as such.

And I don't understand your "palusot" thing.

  5. "Malungkot maging ibon lalo’t BLUE eagle ka,
Mas okey ang lion pagkat ikaw’y ‘SANG BIDA,
Ops nagpapatawa lang pero na-gets n’yo ba?
He, he, he ... eh kasi baka birdbrain ‘yung iba."

  6. Uhm, Okay. But still, it only implies something and not proves anything. Whatever your theory is, good sir, I leave it to doubt and suspicion until such evidence comes up.

  7. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that the twins approached ateneo, the fact that the twins are already playing for San Beda, ateneo should exercise courtesy and respect by refusing to accept the two. Plus, the two simply vanished without even talking to the coaching staff. Heck! their teammates are even disgusted. Or, ateneo should have at least talked to coach Frankie and told him that the twins really intend to transfer to katipunan. For sure, Frankie would release the two. San Beda never keeps a tight hold of its players. Case in point: the red cubs.

Coach Frankie and his wife already spoke saying that they have no inkling that the twins are getting out of Mendiola. Even the boosters and ninongs of the team are saddened by their unexpected move.

Asking for proof/ evidence? That's the most convenient argument or retort one may give given the situation. What proof do you need? The circumstances speak for themselves. Besides, the best (or only) way the conspiracy could be proven is by extracting an admission from the participants themselves. I don't think the semerads, their manager and the ateneo camp would start singing like a flock of birds, incriminate one another and start shooting themselves on the foot.

I remember in December of 2005, San Beda invited ateneo for a dual meet in Mendiola. San Beda got beaten in their own turf by more ten points. After the game, San Beda treated the blue eagles, its coaching staff and supporters for a sumptuous dinner. That's how San Beda shows respect and admiration to ateneo.

  8. sorry to disappoint you guys. i have a very reliable source in mendiola. MVP didn't have a hand in this. in fact, he admonished the twins' decision to transfer suddenly. he did not like it at all.

  9. Then I guess that will speak for everything, any other info that will help us with discovering the facts, Sir Courtside Spotter?

    ReplyDelete
  10. "Circumstances speak for themselves?" Still, I do not think that this is evidence. More of speculations, yes. But evidence? Of course, they will not openly admit it, but there will and there will always be proof of such, and I don't think present circumstances, those only things that we have right now, would count as valid proof.

Moreover, if this is an orchestrated plan, then everyone should have been informed by this, because at the end of the day, the Semerads are not only athletes but also students. And since schools are concerned with keeping and passing on student records, their transfer will be known by all those who are concerned with the twins' formation in the schoool BOTH as students and as athletes. They withdrew from San Beda, and I believe that the coaching staff as well as their professors would know that. Coach Frankie Lim would know that (and hence, I doubt Coach's statement).

And c'mon, the Red Lions and the Blue Eagles have their own share of bonding sessions. The same has been done countless times by the Blue Eagles to the Red Lions.

  11. @Courtside Spotter:

Assuming what you stated is true:

Anyone in the shoes of MVP could easily admonish the twins. If he gives a directive to the coaching staff of ateneo not to admit the twins in the basketball program, that would completely remove any persisting perception as to his involvement in this incident.

  12. @ Earl:

Even in the court of law, circumstances are taken into consideration in drawing conclusion and weighing allegations.

You always speak of speculations but you stated that you "believe that the coaching staff as well as their professors would know that. Coach Frankie Lim would know that (and hence, I doubt Coach's statement)." If that's not speculating, I don't know what it is.

If everyone is informed of their move, then why is the whole bedan community reacting with utter disgust after they disappeared? The answer is simple-everyone was blindsided.

The twins left mendiola because a school is already prepared to accept them. No sane athlete would abruptly leave his present school and just shop for a school later on. Numerous talks and negotiations have ensued for months (or even for a year) between the player and the other school before the latter pulls the trigger.

  13. Swtikan ang naganap. And malinaw, San Beda ang naswitik.

  14. Of course, circumstances would speak, but even these speculations you have, if you look at it properly, are too hasty and misleading. What I said about transferring from one school to another is not speculation. I'm just bringing up the SOPs involved in transferring from one school to another. Every school follows that procedure, and I believe that San Beda, as an educational institution that adheres to academic standards, follows that procedure too.

Despite your insistence that may switikang nangyari, I'm sorry sir, but you still doesn't have anything substantial to warrant your claim. It seems that even circumstances point to the Semerads leaving, San Beda letting them go, and Ateneo letting them in. Thus, I leave it to you.

And for you as someone who seems rooting heavily for the Red Lions, I would suggest that you set your hate aside and focus on what you have right now. I remember the Ateneo Blue Eagles losing Mark Tallo before the start of the UAAP, and the Ateneo community had these speculation, wild even, that there might have been things happening, but once they knew that Tallo transferred out of his own volition, then they accepted it as it is, and focus on winning another crown.

I suggest that once evidence comes up that it's the Semerads' decision to leave rather than play in a team that they don't want to belong to, rather than sourgrape and come up with conclusions that seem to be haphazard, hasty, and lack evidence, then I suggest you do the same as the Ateneo community did. San Beda has a strong recruiting force as Ateneo does, and I believe that they have something to ofer to keep their players intact.

Switik talaga.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Earl here easily accepted as fact what court side spotter reported earlier.

The name Paolo Trillo came up. Can someone from Ateneo ask him what transpired during their meeting with the Semerads and the gay manager a week before the incident.

For the sports journalists out there, ask Paolo Trillo.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I say that we stop these blind accusations and start searching for things that would warrant our claims. And perhaps, we have to even listen for what Paolo Trillo has to say. And we wait for something from the Semerads, and the coaching staff of San Beda and Ateneo.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ask Paolo Trillio why he was in the office of the gay manager of the twins.

Will you please do it for us Mr. Earl?

    ReplyDelete
  20. If the Semerad twins wants to leave San Beda, then let it be. It doesn't matter anyway to San Beda. It's just that Bedan Community really didn't expect that the Semerad Brothers are leaving Mendiola for no valid reasons. But in my case, i would just respect their decisions and still treat them as bedan brother. "once a bedan, ALWAYS a bedan" I was just thinking, are they gonna change their Lion tattooed on there left hand with an Eagle? haha

  21. Baka sa kabilang braso eagle naman.
    Bahala sila sa buhay nila.

All I know is that the Red Lion will be a stronger team next season. 17 Awesome!!!

  22. The Bedans are OK to let go of the twins. It was the manner of their exit that was really unacceptable. Paolo Tillo, together with the twins, the gay manager and some Ateneo boosters, conspired to leave San Beda in the dark up to the very end. The San Beda coaching staff and the community was blindsided. In local parlance, "NA-SWITIK."

Anyway, Ateneo, the twins and the gay manager-cum-dollhouse queen deserve one another.
